Hi there! It's been another long radio silence, which sucks. My year was (once again) weird, full of a lot of good and bad things, and a hell of a lot of growing up. Finishing grad school (almost..), trying to find a job, figuring out what to do with my life.. trivial things, really. Part of this crisis involved a late night decision to buy a domain and build a new website. So, from here on out you can find me at palindromeknits.com! I just put up a post about a little foray into dyeing yarn with onion skins, I hope you like it!

I hope you'll join me over on my .com.

.. and just like that it was July. I feel like every time I write a post here I feel like I preface it with a blurb about how long I've been away, and I'm going to half skip that.

It's been a crazy year so far. Well, crazy summer, I guess. I started working part time again (those bills are not going to pay themselves), and was lucky enough to visit Edmonton in May. Being back, even through it was only for 12 days and I basically worked the whole time, was so great. It also turned into a pretty excellent road trip, as James and I packed the car and drove the 4000km each way, stopping to see some sights on the way, but mostly just driving for 15 hours a day. When I got back to Ontario, I packed all of my things, including the cats, and moved to Kingston! I've been living here for about a month now and I couldn't be happier. (Though, I do miss all my great Peterborough people. They were the best.)

The only problem with this city is the yarn scene sucks. But I am currently typing this across from a market that has been running since 1801. Can't argue with that.

This week I am furiously working on a shawl for my grandma's 90th birthday (more on that later) and a pair of dresses because I am going to Paris on Saturday! James and I are spending the week in the city, with no big plans other than visit museums and eat our weight in cheese, carbs, and pastries. OK, the last part is mostly my goal. He is much healthier than I am.

So if anyone has suggestions for some off-the-beaten path activities in Paris, let me know! We visited 8 years ago, but I'm sure we missed so much.

Stay cool, everyone! And see you soon. I promise.

Way back in the dark ages (aka about 3 years ago) while I was working my summer job, a lovely Raveler in Edmonton was destashing a ton of Terra and, being not broke at the time, picked it up. I accumulated all the colours to make Adelaide, but it just never felt quite right. So the yarn sat languishing on my shelf, and eventually made the move out to Ontario with me. Where it sat more.

Enter the Rosemont cardigan.

I saw this pop up on the Kelbourne Woollens blog and knew that it had to be mine. Further clicks proved that I not only had the required yarn, but also enough to make my size. So I'm calling it fate. And since it's Olympics time, this will be my beat-the-games project. I probably won't watch a ton of the games, given that I'm TV-less and not super into sports, but it still counts if I knit by Netflix. More specifically, the new season of House of Cards which debuts next week.

Last night I started my swatch, and hopefully I can get it finished before heading to the sports bar to watch highlights of the opening ceremonies. One can knit and block a swatch in thesis-writing breaks, right? For those curious, I'm using the Yarrow colourway and it's a bit more blue in real life than in the photo. It's a delightful colour.

While I had the camera out for swatch photos, the cats decided that it was photoshoot time. I swear to god, I turned around and Monty turned into a grown-ass cat. How does this happen?

Happy Friday!

In the New Year's spirit, I finally started to swatch and cast on the behemoth Timberline sweater I talked about here. I decided to use the Briggs and Little Heritage which is such a nice yarn to work with! It's got a similar hand to the originally-called-for Shelter for less than half the price. (And it's a Canadian product, so that's cool) The biggest difference that I've noticed between the two is that the B&L feels more dense while the Shelter is more airy. I let my dad choose the colour and he went with Seafoam which is a really beautiful teal-grey colour after a near catastrophe as his first choice was grape.

Purple.

The man wanted a purple cabled sweater.

He is a bit colourblind, so maybe it doesn't look purple to him, but I refused to knit 2000+ yards in purple. That's a thing I just can't do.

My swatching went well, but it turns out that the B&L Regal (which is closer to a DK weight) may have been a better choice. I couldn't get the Heritage to get to gauge without turning it into some kind of bulletproof fabric, so I'll be knitting the 43" size to get to the 47" finished measurement. Now, this evening I'll definitely get my tubular cast on going and start some sleeves!

What are your new year's knits? (And stay warm everyone! I got a weather alert warning for a snow squall in my area which isn't even a thing I knew existed)hannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11817444870232223850noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7354114803401765164.post-37816552355653645622013-11-08T10:12:00.000-07:002013-11-08T10:12:49.711-07:00An Ode to Beautiful Fall Knits

It's that time of year where everyone is publishing drool-worthy knitwear patterns. In between anticipating the next Brooklyn Tweed collection, the gorgeous new issue of Pom Pom Quarterly, and all the beautiful self-published beauties coming out, I don't even know what to do with myself. I need more time in the day! (And a bigger yarn budget, but you probably know how that goes)
The biggest fall winner to date has to be the Paper Tiger collection that surfaced a bit over a week ago. I feel like this collection hits all the things that I've been looking for lately. Simple designs, colourwork to keep it a bit interesting, and neutral but exciting palettes.

My first and undying love from this collection has to be Moon Pulls. I mean come on. Garter stitch? Lopi? Cashmere blend for the cuff and collar linings? I can't wait to get knitting on this one! I absolutely love the look of garter stitch in garments, but it's stretchiness is often a recipe for disaster. (I made the famous Garter Yoke Cardigan ages ago and it stretched out to be unwearable. Not that the garter was the only issue, but you know. Such a bummer in any event) Especially with the cuffs being lined, stretching shouldn't be an issue.

Next up, Nikoline the socks. I feel like I'm turning a bit of a corner with socks. I will admit that I hated knitting socks with a passion, but after I finished the ugliest socks of all time, I'm a total convert. Hand knit socks are the best and now I'm on the prowl for great new patterns. I love that the stranded design on the cuff means an extra layer of warmth too. I think these will make great travel knitting over the holidays! I've already ordered some yarn from Knit Picks in similar colours, but if it goes well I'd love to do a grey pair with white contrast.

Finally, Acorn Teeth. I've always loved the idea of smaller mittenettes for the early fall and spring seasons, but I've never found any that get the proportions quite right. I also really like the colours used here. Green and gray? Bring it on.

I really hope I can carve out some time to work on some of these patterns over the next couple months. The Christmas knitting season is upon us, so I'll be back soon with a post of my plans. I'm taking my Christmas holidays a bit early this year, so I have to get cracking! Now I'm back to working on some homework before bringing my new kitten home. This weekend will be pleasantly full of kitten introductions, so cross your fingers for quick friendships and minimal hissing.

What are your favourite fall knits this year?
Can you believe it’s almost the end of
October? I’ve spent the last (almost) 2 months trying to make sense of school
and get into my thesis-writing groove. Trying and failing, but it’s a work in
progress. October seems to have turned into a month of thinking thoughts about
my future and what on earth I’m doing in grad school. As always, though, there
are happy things to settle my mind. Without any real knitting progress to show,
though I’ve been knitting a ton, here are some good things happening right now:

Settling into life with the
cat Monty Burns. (Seen above flashing his nuts like he just doesn’t care) His
favourite way to be held is like a baby and he frequently just passes out with
his little tongue sticking out. Even though he’s a bitey little man who doesn't believe in sleep-ins, I still
love him to bits.

Deciding to get another cat!
Monty is a high energy little guy and both my roommate and I live lives that
require being out of the house for multiple hours a day. I met an amazing lady
friend for him this week and I’m hoping that nobody else takes her home from
the shelter before Sunday! Accepting my fate as a cat lady is kind of
liberating. I grew up in a 2-cat household, and I’ve felt empty being catless
for the last 7 years or so. And it’s OK to buy a cat for your cat, right?

Making myself feel better about not being at
Rhinebeck this weekend by curling up under a wool blanket, knitting some socks,
drinking pumpkin chai tea and watching Netflix with my guy. I can manufacture
fall vibes inside a tiny apartment like nobody’s business.

James and hopefully I’ll get both knitting and some thesis writing done. I also
have an FO that was finished in May to photograph. What are you up to this week?

It's official.. I'm home! Well, sort of home. I've been in Kingston helping my boyfriend set up his apartment and life out here. One massive perk of his apartment is that, much like a lot of Kingston, is quite close to the lake. So for the past 3 days we've made trips down to go swimming! I'm a massive wimp about jumping into water, but I've still managed to cannonball a good few times. Being away from my actual ontario home (WHERE THERE IS A KITTEN NOW) means also being away from my stash. I made a pit stop last week to drop off luggage, pick up some of my clothing, visit with friends and grab a project to work on. Conveniently for me, Sarah started running a KAL with Kollabora that lined up perfectly with my timeline. So, I'm overcoming my hatred for socks and am making a new pair!

I'm using Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in the colour Mansfield's Garden Party. I bought this yarn awhile back despite my general leaning away from variegated yarns. The colours are just so pretty! Unfortunately, I'm kind of unhappy with the pooling. As you can see in the photos, I've got a weird spiral stripe thing going on, and on the foot part it looks like the pooling is lining up almost perfectly every row. I really love the way the colours are all mixed up in the heel/gusset area, though. Whatever, they're socks. They don't have to win a beauty contest!

I also want to take a minute to talk about how awesome Kollabora is. It's sort of like Ravelry in terms of project sharing, but it covers all kinds of techniques. I'm really enjoying looking through sewing projects lately as I have slightly grand plans of sewing everything. There's a button to my profile in the sidebar too. I'm planning on updating my more recent projects once I actually have stable internet access.

Are you on Kollabora? I'd love to add more awesome crafters to my feed!hannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11817444870232223850noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7354114803401765164.post-63076338166612249092013-08-08T04:20:00.000-06:002013-08-08T04:20:17.032-06:00Fall Knit List

With just over a week left for me in
Italy, it's time for me to seriously get excited about coming home. I’ve had a great time despite my
virtually constant grumblings about the heat and humidity. My thesis research
has more or less recovered from catastrophe in June and I’m well on track to be
finished up with a couple days to spare! (Though, I will probably be in the lab
anyways because, well, that’s the only air-conditioned room I know of that
doesn’t require me to purchase overpriced drinks) My daydreams are currently
being filled with sweet thoughts of temperatures (hopefully well) below 30°C,
hot coffee, crisp bike rides and liberal applications of wool in my wardrobe.

My big project this fall is, per my last post, going to be the Timberline sweater for my dad. Given Sarah’s reaction to
the (24 page) pattern, which is basically what mine was when I read her post, I
need some simple selfish knitting suitable for social occasions, thesis breaks
and whose products are as cozy as possible. For now, three patterns have stolen
my heart:

Larch Cardigan by Amy Christoffers. This
has been in my queue forever and I really need to get on it. I love how classic
the shape is! I can see myself wearing this for a good couple years. I already have the yarn waiting for me at my fave LYS in Peterborough!

Super slouch socks from Emily Foden. I’ve
declared my hatred for socks in the past, but I can’t help but give these a
chance. I absolutely adore the colour combo she used, with a neutral for the main
portion of the sock and bright colours for the heel and toe. I’m planning on
using some Tosh Merino Light in Antler for the main colour and Edison bulb for
the contrast. They definitely won’t be the sturdiest socks ever, but I think
they’ll be decent for around-the-house wear.

Forge Toque from Jared Flood. OK, so this
isn’t exactly a no-brainer, but I’ve had 2 skeins of Shelter in Wool Socks
languishing in my stash for a while and I’m really into red accessories right
now. I’ll have to track down some of my interchangeable needle tips to make
this one, as most of the shaping happens through changes in needle size.

So, with that, I head back to my pile of
bones and daydreams of home. What patterns are you dreaming about for fall?

Let’s just take a
minute here and talk about how awesome Brooklyn Tweed is. Again. While I’m
always finding myself in love with BT collections, along with the rest of the
knitting world, but there are two reasons that I’m especially happy about BT
men:

1. The
world really needs more modern men’s sweaters

2. Those
sweaters should be modeled by (really) well-styled bearded men in a loft.
Obviously.

Tragically for
me, the boy that has stolen my heart is also less than fond of handknits,
especially garments. (I’m confident I’ll get him one day, but today is not that
day) The other knitworthy guy in my life is my dad and, well.. his wardrobe just
happens to be lacking in the classic woolly sweater department. So, I send off
the lookbook with an offer to make him a sweater if he liked any of them and he
responded with a vote for Timberline because “it would fit well should [he]
decide to start smoking a pipe in [his] later years.”

This sweater was
one of my favourites after a first look through, possibly because it reminds me
of Exeter (which has been in the back of my brain as a bucket list sweater for
ages). Though I have to say, Dad, way to pick the sweater with the greatest
yardage requirement. Seriously. Never mind that long torsos and gorilla arms
run in the family, both of which necessitate yardage-eating sweater
modifications. And while I’d love to tackle this in the recommended Shelter, I
also really like paying rent and eating food. So, I was brainstorming possible
subs and I’m leaning toward something like Briggs and Little Regal, or maybe
even just Cascade 220.

I leave Canada alone for 5 weeks and it decides to implode. My heart is breaking for all those who have lost homes, have had their property damaged and those who have a long road of rebuilding ahead. There's not a ton I can do from over here, but I did purchase an Alberta love magnet from Amy Victoria Wakefield, and she's donating proceeds to the Red Cross. (And, apparently, replacing artwork of hers that was damaged in the flood. How cool is that?)

So seriously, Canada. Stop it. Don't make me come over there. (Much as I would really love to right now) Stay dry and safe, everyone!hannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11817444870232223850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7354114803401765164.post-28438911374126445112013-06-17T02:39:00.000-06:002013-06-17T02:39:25.425-06:00FO: Rock Island Shawl

Well, it's about freaking time that I have some actual knits to show off. Being separated from my stash is a good thing, I guess, because I've finished 2 things in the last couple weeks. But first and foremost, my Rock Island Shawl!

I seriously never thought I would finish this sucker. Because you knit the edge first and then pick up and work in, the beginning takes forever. I think I almost lit this thing on fire at least 5 times. In the end, totally worth it and I'll probably make another one.

I used Little Red Bicycle's Spark Lace which is a 75% merino, 20% silk and 5% metallic blend. That's right, this sucker sparkles. It's actually barely noticeable, but every once in awhile I catch a glint of silver in the sunshine. I like it! It's definitely super wearable too. I can't wait to actually block this with pins and real tools when I get back to Canada! You can see my Rav project page here.

Now, I'm trying to figure out ways to keep from dying in the heat. Seriously, my entire life has been spent with summers that get maybe 1 or 2 days above 30 degrees and now I'm facing down a forecast of days in the 30's for the next month or two. Oh, and it turns out I'm extra allergic to Italian mosquitoes (zebra/tiger ones?) so I'm spending my evenings slathering myself in antihistamine cream and trying to stay cool in my non-air conditioned room.

Stay cool, friends!hannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11817444870232223850noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7354114803401765164.post-29479814833508769872013-06-06T05:35:00.001-06:002013-06-06T05:35:30.913-06:00Venice

Well, I made it to Italy! I haven’t been
around these parts since I only really have internet access while I’m on
campus, and I never have time to write a post. So, instead of knitting over my
lunch break, I brought my laptop to the park and here it goes!

I’m still not entirely sure of how I feel
about my trip this far. I’m feeling incredibly homesick, and that’s putting a
real damper on my desire to do anything. I’ve been working 9-10 hour days on my
research and I’m typically exhausted by the end of the day and just retreat
back to my apartment without doing much walking about. In order to counteract
my apathy 2 weeks ago, I took a day trip to Venice. I’m only a 1.5 hour train
ride or so away, and it’s only a €15 round trip train ticket, so what the hell,
right?

This was my second trip to Venice. The
first time, about 5 years ago, I was with James and we had just come off a
rough week. (We had been robbed in France and I was without a wallet, so he had
to pay for everything until I got a new credit card. Top that off with getting
a fine for messing up our train passes.. it was a bad scene and I was super
grumpy)

I arrived nice and early in the morning and
was greeted by crisp (almost fresh!) air and pleasantly empty streets. I took
my time strolling around, but at about 11 all the tourists are out in full
force and, well, it gets a little cozy in those tiny streets. I passed at least
5 wedding parties, countless buskers and tourist groups. I did manage to make
it to Piazza San Marco this time (somehow missed on the first grumpy visit) and
the square, along with the waterfront, were just insanely packed. I ended up
taking a turn to try and head back to the train station, but that kind of
failed and I walked through small and empty streets for hours, only occasionally
hitting a congested canal but I fairly easily abandoned those routes. I headed
back home at about 3pm, and was quite happy to crash into bed and rest my feet.
That was a lot of walking!

All in all, I probably won’t make a point
of going back there again. I feel kind of pretentious saying that, but I think
there are much more beautiful places to visit that don’t have the same degree
of tourist mania. (If you can’t get a free map, there are probably too many
tourists ;)

Obviously my #3 concern (behind finding flights and accommodations) is what knitting to bring. I want to keep it light, because I only have limited space in my luggage, and because it's going to be summer in a hot place. As a lifetime almost arctic-circle dweller, I'm concerned that I might die in the heat, so light things are a must. Last time I was away from my stash this long was on a backpacking trip, so all I could pack were socks. (Somehow I managed to make it 6 months of cross-continental travel without breaking a DPN! About 10 seconds after realizing this and being all self-congratulatory about it I totally snapped one in half, though. True story) Anyways, this time I have an apartment to call home base so I can be a bit more flexible with my choices. Here's what has been on my brain!

Candidate #1: Beautiful Spring Scarf from the Purl Bee

Photo from the Purl Bee

I fell instantly in love with this scarf. Seriously. I love the simplicity and the vibrance of the tassels at the bottom. It's such a fantastic contrast! I'm fairly certain I could never finish this scarf if I had steady access to both my stash and an LYS, as I have the attention span of a gnat. I figure this could be a solid desert island project! And since I can't find any knotting cord close by, nor can I afford the shipping from Purl Soho to recreate the tassles in this masterpiece, I'll have to figure that out later. I have some lovely cotton/linen in my stash that would make a great substitute for the scarf portion, though! (I admit, I fondled the yarn called for in the pattern for a shameful amount of time when I visited Purl last month. It's amazing.)

Candidate #2: Muji Painting by Lies Vandesande

Do you detect a theme? Because it's miles of stockinette stitch that go around my neck. I loved this cowl when I found it, and I was even more convinced when Ariane made one in the most beautiful shade of mauve. I would be inclined to pick up a couple skeins of Malabrigo Lace for this, given how fantastically soft and light that stuff is. Or maybe some Tanis lace. Who knows.

Candidate #3: Lakeshore Shawl by Glenna C.

Image from Glenna C.

This one is, by far, the most brain intensive of my candidates. I've had this queued on Ravelry for well over a year. I love the pattern, the scale, and the fact that it would fill a niche in my wardrobe that remains empty. I picked up some yarn at Romni on my first visit which is a nice, single ply in between fingering and lace weights with this shawl in mind.

Candidate #4: Bridgewater Shawl by Jared Flood

Image from Brooklyn Tweed

Ok, so this one only recently hit my radar in an urgent way. I'm possibly only including it in my brainchild list because a) Chelsea just finished one and I have massive shawl envy and b) I would do it in Malabrigo lace and, well, that just sounds like a great idea. One annoyance with this one is that the middle section is huge, but it is only garter stitch which would be great brainless knitting. I would probably skip the edging for the time being because I don't really feel like carting around the longest circular needle known to man, which is likely what's required.

What are your thoughts? What have you packed for trips away from your stash?

Well, spring is happening in Ontario and it's awesome. I'm feeling refreshed after a couple weeks of low-key working time with plenty of knitting, coffee and open-window time. I even got to crack out my beloved sandals today!

This is going to be a huge month for me. The biggest thing is that I'll be heading to Italy for a three month research trip! This will be my first time really travelling by myself, which is terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. I have a ton of work to do before I go, including a bunch of lab work (fish maceration for the win!), bidding adieu to my current sardine can of a house and moving into a new apartment (THANK GOD) and deciding what to pack in a tiny suitcase. The most important packing decision is, of course, what I'm bringing to knit! I have a couple candidates that I'm working through, I'll post more about those soon! I'm also turning 24 which is terrifying. I remember when I thought I'd have my life together by now. Ha!

For now, I have a (typical) date with an iced americano, Parks and Rec (how have I not watched this before?!), and the never ending edging of my Rock Island shawl. Seriously, this thing is going on forever.

Happy Wednesday, and here's to an awesome May!

I've been appreciating reading short little updates around the blog world, so here's what I'm currently up to:

Watching: I'm getting ready for a Harry Potter marathon to celebrate the completion of my first year of grad school! I've been eating up House of Cards on Netflix on the side as well. (Kevin Spacey is the man. Also, Princess Buttercup is his wife, so there's that.)

Eating: Since my housemates are slowly leaving the house (thank goodness!) there has been extra space in the kitchen for real-food cooking. I just made a big batch of this pasta salad from Pioneer Woman. I added some artichoke hearts and omitted the parmesan. Delicious! I've also been drinking my precious coffee from Stumptown that I picked up in NYC. Can't wait to make some iced coffee out of it!

Reading: I'm trying to line up some summer reads to take to Italy with me. Now that I'm relieved of course readings, I'd love to get some fiction back into my system. I think the first on my docket will be The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson. I'd also like to check out Big Bang by Simon Singh. I saw his lecture at NECSS by the same name, and I'd love to see what the book is like. I've read Neil deGrasse Tyson's take on a similar topic, but you can never learn enough, right? Does anyone have recommendations for summer reads?

Knitting: I currently have a UFO infestation in my room. I'm working on Cardamom, a Stockholm cowl and the Rock Island Shawl as a part of a knitalong with my LYS. My lace skills have turned up the suck and it's taken me a good 5 knitting hours to get a single lace repeat done. Of the ~15 stitch border. Hopefully I can dedicate some time and brains to it in the next few days!

Hoping: That the world calms the crap down. I've had it with disasters, natural or otherwise.

I hope that you all had a lovely weekend! I'm going to continue the celebration of being done my first year by hanging out in my sweatpants and knitting all day Monday!

This last weekend I had the pleasure of heading down to New York City to attend NECSS. I had such a great experience attending my first skeptical event! It was great to be around like-minded people that aren't directly associated with archaeology. (I adore my anthropology/archaeology community, but it's fun to see what people who come from different backgrounds have to say too). I also got to see my favourite podcast, The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe, be recorded live twice, which was a whole other amazing thing on it's own. So many good things.

Apart from the sciencey side of things, it was also amazing to see NYC for the first time. It's overwhelming, loud and ridiculously fast-paced. But for all the honking and sirens, there is a ton of amazing stuff going on. I had a great time visiting Warby Parker, Purl Soho, the Lion Brand Studio, Stumptown Coffee Roasters and a ton of other places. My feet have barely recovered from the torture I put them through.

I had my final presentation for my thesis project, and only about 20 pages of writing stand between me and my summer! I'm furiously planning for my trip overseas and trying to keep focused. Clearly I'm doing a good job..

What are your favourite travel knits? Of course this is the issue at the front of my brain. To pack lace? Or not to pack lace. That is the question.

hannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11817444870232223850noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7354114803401765164.post-12214552888968100532013-02-21T20:52:00.000-07:002013-02-21T20:52:29.044-07:00Best. Weekend. Ever.

I don't have much to talk about on the knitting front. I've been working on a sock (hereafter to be referred to as the Sock of Hate) out of Berroro Comfort Sock during what little knitting time I've had available. I hate that thing. I think I'm one of those people who just shouldn't knit socks, but I'm determined to finish, since I only have the heel and foot chunk of the second one to go. From here on out, I pledge to knit only worsted weight socks. Ever.

In happy news, I got to spend an amazing almost 5 days with James in Toronto. I think we saw all the big things the city had to offer and were even lucky enough to catch a 16 piece band playing Radiohead songs. (I should add that one of the trombonists was a dead ringer for Matt Smith, so I'm pretending I saw the doctor take a sweet 'bone solo) Of course, I managed to make a trip to Romni Wools and, as you can see above, James snapped this photo of me in my natural habitat. Handknit toque with pompom? Check. Cat purse? Check. ALL THE YARN? Double check. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of visiting this shop.. note that I'm about 5'8"tall. That's a lot of yarn in there. And this was only 1/4 rows. On the first floor. Amazing.

I'm off to hit the hay and work on some reading for school. I can write 2 papers this weekend, and still have time to cast on Christianna's lovely new cowl, Jessie, right?

It's that time of year where everything happens all at once. It's not like I haven't done this before. I know this annual routine of panicking and flailing, but I can never get the better of it. (Though, this year includes the added fun of a thesis proposal. How did I get here?) As a result, my knitting time has taken a beating. Since I don't really have much time, I've been relishing the stockinette tubes laying around my room. My Stasis pullover gained a good 1.5" this weekend, but at the expense of my Gathering Stripes. That sucker is going nowhere fast.

But I'm dreaming of new and better things, so I better get finishing!

My new (and awesome) LYS, Needles in the Hay, had it's birthday sale a couple weeks back and among the things I picked up were these two balls of Berroro Blackstone Tweed. My initial plans for it was Stephen West's Pom-Pom It! hat, but I've since changed my mind to his Raxtur hat. I kind of love the texture and versatility of Raxtur, and I think these colours would work really nicely together. Different enough to be stripey, but similar enough to not be weird. Just my style.

This weekend James is coming all the way out to Toronto from Edmonton, so I'm gleefully anticipating exploring a city with him again. I can't wait to eat all the good food! It will be a welcome break after this week (which has been bananas), and it will take lots of work to catch up, but 4 days off will be lovely. Now, to get a couple stitches in before bed!

Fellow students, how do you balance your crafting with schoolwork? I really need to work on maximizing my time in an effective way. I have big plans, after all!

-Hhannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11817444870232223850noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7354114803401765164.post-20775979814957017612013-02-04T16:19:00.000-07:002013-02-04T16:19:16.505-07:00Finally, an FO! (Or Two)I basically spent yesterday curled up in a pile of snot and tissues yesterday, and my prolific amount of internet surfing reminded me that I hadn't been here in awhile. Part of that is my seeming inability to take photos. I swear I have all the things I need, I just never seem to connect life to the lens. And blog posts without photos are sad. After some coaching through photo exporting processes, I finally have documentation of the two little sweaters I made for Christmas presents. Miraculously, one of them was finished in time. The other one was finished before I came home, so I give myself half points on that one. Both of these knits were for the progeny of my favourite neighbours. Their little girl, who I've previously knit for, is one of the coolest toddlers in the universe. Right when I moved out to Ontario they announced the arrival of another little dude. I'm sure he'll be just as awesome as his sister and also deserved to be covered in handknits!

First up is Baby Sophisticate. I used Berroco Vintage Chunky which made for a super quick knit. I cast this sucker on during my shortest flight home and I quickly got through the raglan shaping before landing. I'm a bit sad I didn't make it bigger since, wait for it, babies grow like weeds.. No matter, the buttons are adorable and he'll look like a tiny scholar for as long as he fits it!

Second is Gathering Stripes. I started this way back in the summer on my drive out to Ontario but I just never really got around to dealing with it until October or so. It's made out of Madelinetosh Merino Light (I told you I liked this kid) in Composition Book Grey and Robin's Egg for the stripes. I really wasn't sure about the colour combo until I got the stripes going. It ended up fitting her with room to spare, and I think the colours are unisex enough that little brother will be able to wear it in a few years. You can't see it in the photo, but I put wooden buttons on the collar of this one too. I couldn't decide if blue or grey was the way to go, but you can't go wrong with a touch of nature!

Right now I'm working on a grown up Gathering Stripes out of Ultra Alpaca for myself. Some of the details are up on my project page if you want to take a look. I just finished the third ball about two thirds of the way through a sleeve and need to wait until tomorrow to wind another one. I'm really excited to wear this one. The fit is great thus far! Since my needles can't be empty, I'm also working on a hot water bottle because.. well.. why not?

What are you working on? Are you ready to leave the January blues in the dust?

So, here we are. Christmas break is over and I had my first class of the term bright and early this morning. I'm trying really really hard not to be bitter and sad, but so far it's not going well. I had a wonderful holiday and spent some good quality time with my Edmonton people, most importantly I got to see James every single day while I was back. We ate lots, went swimming, went to the museum and art gallery, watched a ton of Star Trek (which spawned a nifty project) and got to share in each other's company. I really, really needed that. Coming back to Ontario post-holiday felt even harder than leaving in the summer. Returning to a too-full house with too many dishes in the sink (and a missing Jennie the Potter mug.. grumble) has put me off to a rough start.

So, this is how I'm turning this sucker around.

Obviously, I'm knitting stuff. James requested a new hat, and I have another christmas knit to wrap up. I'm slowly accumulating the Lopi to make Ragga's Óðinn sweater. This recently turned into a pay pattern, but I snagged a copy while it was still free. I need to do some math to work out some waist shaping, and I'm omitting the band at the hem and cuffs, since Alafoss discontinued the prettiest gold colour which is one of my contrasts. I need to ration that beautiful colour.

Not to mention the other knitting I want to do. Sweaters, cowls, socks.. I'm all about being cozy right now.

I also want to try and eat more real food. I find it insanely difficult to cook while sharing a kitchen with 7 people, but I need to figure out a schedule that puts me in the kitchen rather than my favourite burrito joint. I got a Magic Bullet for Christmas, so I'm planning lots of smoothies. Those count as being in the kitchen, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm hoping that this year will get better as it grows, and hopefully I'll grow a bit with it too.

Onward and upward!

On Monday night, I had the pleasure of seeing Mother Mother and Hannah Georgas live in Peterborough. I haven't missed a Mother Mother show since 2007, and I'm glad I got to uphold the tradition even though my usual partner in crime was far, far away. They were fantastic, as usual, and seeing them in a relatively small venue was a serious perk of being in a small town. Usually I'm stuffed in a crowd of hundreds of people or behind giant cement beams, or a really tall person. This time, I got a balcony thing with no obstructing view and plenty of dancing space.

Seeing live music always re-energizes me. I really needed it, especially with the end of term looming, with term papers to write and final arrangements to be made. Just in case anyone else needs a boost, here are some songs that I've been playing on repeat when I can.

First is Prairie Girl by Rah Rah. I adore this girl's voice and, well, that's a beat worthy of walking across campus in the cold while in a homesick mood.

Second is Waiting Game by Hannah Georgas. She played this at the show, and it was great, but this version has a ton of fantastic Canadian musicians accompanying as well (including the lead from Mother Mother and a band member from Tegan and Sara).

Last but not least, here's a live version of The Sticks by Mother Mother. This record is definitely moodier than previous ones, but it's a great soundtrack to early sunsets, long nights, and frustration with too many roommates.

Well, I'm back to the books. Quantification methods wait for no (wo)man! What music have you found lately?
My dad and I drove through on the way to IKEA, but that totally doesn't count, so 2 weekends ago my friend and I decided to take a day and hit the town. I was quite taken with the place. It was crazy busy, but that was outweighed by the fantastic food, amazing shops neat architecture and unique street art. I stopped in to Romni Wools and just about melted. (I also went to Lettuce Knit, Americo and The Knit Cafe.. I couldn't help myself) I can't wait to go back in the new year.
I'm now starting the last 2 weeks before I go back home for Christmas. I'm so unbelievably excited! (I also sort of can't believe I've made it through my first term of grad school) I have a great gigantic list of cooking I want to do since I won't have to share with 6 people. Being reunited with my kitchenaid is going to be a spectacular thing. I still have a term paper to write, some classes to prep for and some christmas knitting to finish! Hopefully I can squeeze it all in. At least I have a fairly substantial treat at the end of the term.

I hope all the USians out there had a nice thanksgiving!
It's been a rough week. I'm piled under mountains of school work, frustrating assignments for marking, surrounded by the noise of too many roommates, and eating lousy (for me) food. It's not good. I'm ready for the term to be over and I'm ready to go home.

Being away from home is a lot harder than I expected. There are some awesome things about where I am, for instance I went to Toronto last weekend and it cost me $30. It's also November and there's no snow on the ground and I haven't had to put away my moccasins yet. The people I have here are fantastic and I love them to bits. That being said, I'm missing my familiar haunts, hugs from my love, and a certain golden retriever's waggly tail. I'm missing my wonderful friends and the river valley.

Only 3 weeks to go.. not that I'm counting.
Today I'm writing from my bunker of an office while almost being buried under a million things to do. I couldn't make it out to any Remembrance Day ceremonies today, so in lieu, I wanted to post a picture I took in Toronto yesterday at old city hall. I was lucky enough to visit Vimy Ridge with James in 2007. I think that visit changed the way we both treat this day. Standing at the top of that hill and looking out at the naked landscape, walking around the tunnels and seeing the helmets, canteens and other personal items left behind, walking the rows of headstones, both marked and unmarked. It all makes one feel very very small. We all owe so much.
I was really good and only came away with 4 skeins of yarn! Staying on budget was tough, there were so many wonderful things.

The first thing I found myself was some Wonderfully Wooly from Green Mountain Spinnery. It's a skein of 250 yards of 100% New England wool. I've been loving the look of marled woollens this year with plenty of inspiration coming from Jenny Gordy's beautiful blog. I've been coveting the Forge hat from Brooklyn Tweed and thought this yarn would be springy enough to make the cables pop, but still have some nifty colours. I did buy the pattern, and was not so thrilled to find out that all the shaping is done through changing needle sizes. Oh well, it'll be worth it.

The second (and most coveted) purchase of the weekend was 2 skeins of Traveller from Cephalopod Yarns. I stopped by the booth on the first day, but there was only 1 skein of the beautiful 'Bird in Hand, PA' colourway. Thankfully another batch got brought in on Sunday and I got my pick of about 10 skeins for matching colours! I was thinking of doing something like the Stockholm Cowl with it, but who knows.

Last but not least, I picked up some BFL Sport from Blue Moon Fibre Arts in the Black Bird colourway. Of all my choices, I think this was the most impulsive. The price was right ($30 for 604m of BFL!) and my colour choices came down to this and a light grey. I guess all the deep fried pickles and cider got to me, because I went with the dark one. I honestly have no clue what to do with this, but the colours are striking and subtle at the same time and I couldn't resist. (This one's darker in real life than my photo, but I had to show off the pretty shades!)

This weekend I went out to the market, got some groceries, finished some marking, and then hunkered down with my knitting needles and Buffy on Netflix. I appear to have left my favourite headband at home, so I picked up some Berroco Peruvia yesterday to make a headband. I should have an FO post soon!
